Methodology for verifying the performance of a heating element

A popular malfunction of household appliances and heaters is the failure of the heating element. If your washing machine does not heat water during washing or the iron spiral does not heat up, you should definitely ring this element of the chain with a tester. In this article we will tell you how to check the heater with a multimeter at home, and also provide some useful video instructions on the topic.

Verification technology

First of all, we will consider how the heating element is dialed, after which we will delve deeper into almost moments related to the repair of household appliances. So, you can check the heater according to the following scheme:

  1. Calculate heater resistance. To do this, use the formula: R = U2/ P, where U is the voltage in the network (220 volts), and P is the rated power of the heating element, which can be found in the instrument passport.
  2. Next, be sure to disconnect the device under test from the mains, get to the heating element and disconnect the wires from it.
  3. Turn the multimeter into resistance measurement mode (200 Ohm range) and touch the probes to the terminals, as shown in the photo below:

Using a meter

Who does not know how to use the tester, we recommend reading the article - how to use a multimeter. After you touch the probes to the conclusions, several situations may occur, namely:

  • The value on the scoreboard is approximately the same as the calculated one, which indicates the operation of the heater.
  • “0” is displayed, which means a short circuit, replacement is required.
  • “1” or infinity is displayed - an open circuit has occurred, the heater needs to be replaced.

You also need to check the heater for breakdown (leakage current) using a multimeter. To do this, we translate the device into buzzer mode, with one probe touch the output, and with the other to the heating element body, as shown in the photo below:

Checking the washing machine

The buzzer beeped - there is a breakdown, which means that you can not do without replacing the part.

It is also advisable to check the insulation resistance of the heating elements with a megohmmeter. To do this, include it in the measuring range "500 V". One probe touch the contact of the heater, the second to the body of the appliance. Insulation resistance greater than 0.5 MΩ is considered normal.

You can learn more about how to check the heater with a megohmmeter and multimeter by watching the video data:

By the way, also, before making a call, you need to visually check the condition of the heating element. To do this, remove scale from the heater and inspect the surface for blisters, cracks and other mechanical damage. If any, the item must be replaced.

Another way to check the heater for an open is to use an electrician's warning lamp. To do this, zero contact from the network is supplied to one TEN contact, and to the second phase through this lamp. If the light is on, there is no break. Make a test lamp anyone can do it from the means at hand, we wrote about this in detail in the article that we referred to.

Here, in fact, are all ways to verify the integrity of the heater. As you can see, in some cases, you can check the heating element even without a multimeter. Below we will watch a video that clearly explains how to ring the heater of a washing machine, boiler, dishwasher, kettle, and other electrical appliances used in everyday life.
